Duende

by Francisco J. Tirado

Will I set ablaze? Will I take this
pain and make it useful make it
into a beautiful balloonanimal?
Will(you twisted buggery thing)I
stop cindering to catch my breath
and fend off a tiger I just found
tailing me? He made a mistake
messing with this mess but the
tiger tells me not to hurry. He’ll
eat me when convenient(I am
comforted)but not today. Isn’t
there(there isn’t)a way he can
take a few fingers or a rib a day.
Will he take my toes I don’t need
those. They feel like falling off
anyway. I climb a tree to be
alone with the coconuts. Come
down
says the tiger and he
informs me it’s been a year(a year!)
and I nearly fell. Will(don’t fucking
tell me what to do)I find solace
in his paws? Will I lay down(with
you)and throw in the metaphorical
towel? To the tiger’s surprise I do.
(bite me)Swallow all my flames.
